If you are involved in a hit-and-run crash, you may initially feel shocked and confused that the driver has fled the scene. Be sure to take the following steps if you find yourself in this situation:

  • Stay at the scene and call the police. The police may be able to locate the driver, interview witnesses, and look for evidence.
  • Gather information. Take photos of the area (street signs, buildings, etc.), damage to your vehicle, and any injuries. You can also add notes to your smartphone.
  • Get medical help. If you have been injured, get treatment as soon as you can.
  • Call your insurance company. Your insurance company will go over the coverage available such as collision to cover damage to your vehicle or uninsured motorist to help pay medical expenses. Your insurance company can file a claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance company if he or she is identified.
