Florida is a no-fault auto insurance state. Your own Personal Insurance Protection (PIP) pays for the initial medical bills no matter who caused the crash. If you go to Urgent Care after a car accident, you will share your auto policy information with the provider, not the policy information of the other driver.

What does PIP pay if I’ve been injured in a car accident?

PIP covers the following:

Benefit Coverage
Medical expenses 80% of reasonable charges
Lost wages 60% of lost income
Replacement services (medically necessary) Covered as needed
Death benefit $5,000

When should I get treatment? What kinds of treatment are covered?

To get this benefit, you must get treatment within 14 days of an accident. Medical expenses covered include

  • Diagnostic tests
  • Surgery
  • Physical therapy
  • Emergency room visits
  • Urgent care treatment
  • Chiropractic treatment
  • Follow-up physician care.

It’s important to provide your own auto insurance information to your providers.

Who is covered?

PIP covers “you, relatives who live in your home, certain passengers who do not own a vehicle, and others who drive your car with your permission” (floridabar.org/public/consumer/tip002).

What are the maximum benefits?

PIP covers up to $10,000 if an Emergency Medical Condition (EMC) is diagnosed and up to $2,500 if no EMC is diagnosed. Your policy deductible may apply.

Will PIP be enough if my injuries are serious?

With a maximum of $10K minus the deductible for accident-related injuries, PIP does not go far if you have suffered a serious injury in a car accident. Contact Phil Hall, PA, an experienced car accident firm, if you have questions about whether additional claims may be pursued against the at-fault driver’s bodily injury coverage, Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage, or other available insurance policies.

Reviewing your Florida automobile insurance coverage will help you understand if you have the right coverage for you as “full coverage” is up to each individual. PIP will cover your medical expenses no matter who causes the crash, but other kinds of policies such as Med Pay or UM/UIM may need to be considered.
